AeroSat Advances Founding of Airborne Internet Consortium
New Hampshire Aviation Communications Company is First to Back Aviation Consortium Incorporation
Amherst, NH, March 3, 2004 – On Wednesday, at a meeting of the Airborne Internet Collaboration Group in McLean, Virginia, AeroSat formally announced the company's intention to financially back formal incorporation and formation of the Airborne Internet Consortium.
Since January 2003, representatives of business and government have been holding periodic meetings to explore the benefits of industry collaboration on the development of an open systems architecture and worldwide standards for internet protocol based digital communications with aircraft.
"The trend toward digital communications operating at a higher speed and lower cost is already well underway on the ground. It's only now beginning to extend to Aviation communications," explained Jim Meer, organizer of the group.
"The Airborne Internet Consortium will push for consistent standards creation, with the many regulatory bodies covering both aviation and communications," said AeroSat Vice President of Business Development William McNary. "Only by involving all the stakeholders in the process will we end up with the necessary set of standards required to advance Airborne Internet implementation."
The Airborne Internet Consortium is forming as a U.S.-based research non-profit 501(c)3 corporation.
AeroSat is collaborating with the Airborne Internet Lab at the FAA Technical Center on the demonstration of the AeroSat Network, a communications system for aircraft that operates at 45 Mbps, which is one thousand times as fast as standard terrestrial 64kbps dial-up service.
About the Airborne Internet Consortium The Airborne Internet Consortium is forming to enable a safer, more secure, more cost-efficient global airspace system by eliminating communications as a constraint on the economic viability of aviation related applications.
